    Русское существительное картина относится к готовому изображению, независимо от того, каким оно выполнено способом: в карандаше, красками, словами. Английские эквиваленты различаются по тому способу, каким они сделаны.
    1. picture — картина, картинка (нейтральное название созданного изображения; оно не предполагает уточнения, как это изображение было создано): a picture of smth — изображение чего-либо; a picture gallery — картинная галерея; to draw a faithful/true picture of life of that period — создать правдивую картину жизни того времени/нарисовать правдивую картину жизни того времени/дать правдивое изображение жизни того периода I bought a children's book with bright colourful pictures for her birthday present. — В качестве подарка ко дню рождения я купил ей детскую книжку с яркими красочными картинками.     2. painting — картина ( написанная красками), живопись, роспись: a panting in oil — картина маслом; a painting in watercolours — акварель It is a painting of a little artist. — Это картина малоизвестного художника. After retirement he took up painting and photography. — После того, как он ушел в отставку/на пенсию, он занялся живописью и фотографией.
    3. drawing — картина, картинка, рисунок, набросок, чертеж (карандашом, чернилами или тушью): to make a drawing — нарисовать картину/сделать набросок/начертить чертеж I am not very good at drawing. — Я плохо рисую. The children were making drawings of all the things in the classroom. — Дети делали рисунки всех предметов в классе./Дети делали зарисовки всех предметов в классе.
    4. canvas — картина масляными красками, холст: The last time I saw the canvas, it was in his studio ready to be framed. — В последний раз, когда я видел у него в студии этот холст, он был подготовлен к тому, чтобы его вставили в раму.
